     This "vanity telephone" ensemble dates back to 1884
     and was used in upscale hotels in the northern U.S.
     The telephone industry was only ten years old at the
     time.

     Although Western Electric was recognized as a
     major supplier of telephone equipment, many
     people do not realize that they were also a major
     manufacturer of appliances such as refrigerators,
     mixers and sewing machines as shown here.

     The 551 switchboard, introduced by Western Electric
     in the 1940's, supported the PBX systems of the day
     and was considered to be one of the most reliable
     switchboards used at the time.
